Kelly Breeds (CenGen) and Marizanne Horn (Sensako) recently attended the 12th Southern African Plant Breeders’ Association (SAPBA) conference held in Umhlanga Ridge, Durban. Kelly presented a very successful talk on the progress made in a joint project between CenGen and the South African Barley Breeding Institute (SABBI) aiming to develop an improved assay for the detection and quantification of Ramularia collo-cygni DNA in barley tissue.
The SAPBA conference is held biennially at different locations across South Africa and provides a platform for interaction between breeders and scientists from different companies and research groups. The conference also included a valuable panel discussion on Plant breeders of the future where topics like career opportunities, essential skills and women in plant breeding were discussed. A large number of students attended the panel discussion – a tell-tale sign of a dynamic field.
